Philadelphia was founded by the Pergamene King Attalos II Philadelphos (159-138 BC), who settled Macedonian soldiers in a fortress to guard an important road junction in the area. The Philadelpheans were proud of their history and the present coin calls them both 'friends of the Caesar' and 'of Macedonian descent'
